Calling It Quits

Not on blogging – don’t worry! (or rejoice!)

I’m calling it quits on my October 18th marathon hopes. :(

(Mike is too)  :(

p4026B

After taking my “doctor recommended” 4 weeks off – I started slowly easing back into running last week.

  • Monday 9/7 – ran 1 mile SLOWLY – felt okay
  • Tuesday 9/8 – ran 1 mile -  felt okay
  • Wednesday/Thursday 9/9-10 – didn’t run, but had weird ACHES in my foot – they were very prominent, and happened while I was laying on the couch.  The pain wasn’t anything similar to what I went to the doctors for, it was just a very general ACHE overall, but very strong.
  • Friday 9/11 – ran 1 mile – felt good
  • Saturday 9/12 – ran 1 mile, took a break, ran 3 miles – felt good
  • Sunday 9/13 – ran 2 miles – hurt, no good, at all

The thing is - I’m the sort of person who really likes to put everything into the tasks they set out to do.  If I don’t officially quit now, I am going to keep running on a hurt foot, potentially doing far worse long term damage. For my sanity’s sake – as well as for my body’s sake – I have to do it.

Am I happy?  Not at all.  But I know it’s right.  And I know sitting and pouting isn’t going to make it better.  So, for the next 3 or 4 months, I’m going to focus on other things, like strength and core training – so that I can start training with a vengeance for the 2010 Cleveland Marathon.

Don’t worry 26.2.  We’re coming for you.  Might be a little later than you expected – but we’re coming!

You guys look like such a fun couple! I think you’re making a good call–you want to be your best. I’m proud of you for taking care of your bod :)

[Reply]

i think this is a really wise decision, but im sorry :(

[Reply]

Man sorry to hear that! Lovin the positive outlook though :)

[Reply]

i can totally commiserate! i’m supposed to be running the chicago marathon in a few weeks and had to quit training thanks to some troubling it band/knee pain. ugh so frustrating especially because i’ve been off running now for 2 months and i want to DIE ha. but, like you, i’m just looking toward the future and the marathons that are hopefully in it for me! :)

[Reply]

better safe than sorry! nice photo, you guys are ferocious ;)

[Reply]

Totally the smart decision. You can race once you’re healed!

[Reply]

So sorry to hear about the marathon. I was really rooting for you. *sniff *sniff

[Reply]

Man, sorry to hear that!! But, you are being smart and listening to your body.

I know you will ROCK Cleveland! :)

I am hoping to either run a marathon in Cleveland or Cincinnati in May. :)

[Reply]

hey girl- it is a hard decision to make, but, as you know, the right one to make. I just made the same decision, so I feel your pain!

[Reply]

Awww darlin, I’m sorry. But you’re so smart to postpone it. You know it’ll come around again soon, and you don’t want to cause more damage. Good for you for being so strong!

[Reply]

I’m sorry you had to postpone your big race but it’s probably for the best! It would be a hard choice to make so kudos to you :)

[Reply]

This only means you are gonna rock the sh!t outa Cleveland x100 since you are resting your feet and gonna take this race by storm and kick da sh!t outa it. Just sayin’

:D

[Reply]

Ahh! Always better to stay rested and prevent injurty than force something!! Wise choice girl! And I’m sorry…i bet it’s disappointing…but you are doing what’s best!! Love you mamA!

[Reply]

I’m sorry about the marathon, but it’s better to postpone it now than be seriously injured later. If you’re looking for some new workouts, exercisetv is my new favorite station. Good luck with the strength training.

[Reply]

haha, GREAT ending!!
I’m sorry about your foot. It seems like everyone in the blog world is getting injured! Ugh. I can’t run due to my platar warts and “weak” ankles, so I feel your pain. I always want to run but I know it’s not good for me. Either way, I’m really glad you’ve set your eyes on a new goal!! You’re smart for not continuing and making an already bad injury, worse.

[Reply]

Aw, that’s too bad about the marathon but I think you made the right decision. You don’t want to make it worse.

I love that pic of you guys!! So cool. Especially that red dress on you!

[Reply]

I think you made the right call; it’s not worth it to permanently injure yourself! And I love your attitude; I know I’ll be reading a badass marathon recap someday soon!

[Reply]

awww allison, i’m sorry you have to make this decision, but i’m glad you’re putting the long-term first!! it’s not worth sacrificing your mobility or your love of running to get the marathon in this year. you’ll enjoy it much more when your body is ready, and your body will thank you then! i’m so proud of you for making this decision.

[Reply]

Great attitude as usual!!! You will do great no matter what you focus on!!

Sad!!

I had to shelve my first ‘thon plans too. It sucked. It sucked BAD. But then the next year I did two marathons, went sub-4 and had an amazing time. And the year after, I did a half IM. And I know there are so many more marathons in my future! And I know it will be the same for you. Bring on Cleveland!

[Reply]

Ahh I absolutely understand – hurt my foot (stress fracture) while training for the half-marathon, and went on a self-imposed 6 weeks of rest. I am not doing the race, which is this upcoming weekend, and it sucks! BUT my foot is all healed, and I am so thankful to actually be able to run pain-free! Did a bunch of elliptical sessions, some strength moves, and yoga!! Hang in there :)

[Reply]

I had to give up marathon plans too. I am hoping to join a team in training this year, so I can get myself ready!

[Reply]

Love that last picture, you look like a fun couple!
Good job listening to your body and more to look forward to next year!

[Reply]

I’m sorry that you won’t be able to do your marathon this year, but I’m glad you have such a practical and positive attitude about it. You’re right—26.2 better watch out!

[Reply]

I’m rejoicing…LA LA LA LA LA LAAAAAA! I’d die without your blog. Not really, but I’d miss it. Not running your October race isn’t going to make a damn bit of difference in the big story of your life, so you are definitely doing the right thing! Now can you move here so we can be non-running, wine guzzling friends together? ;)

[Reply]

Aw man…. that’s always such a tough decision. I’ve had quite of few of those decisions during my own running career regarding injuries, etc, and it’s always a disappointment when you can’t finish out a training plan/race. However, you’ve got a great attitude – you WILL be able to do that 26.2!

(PS- I’m new to your blog, and I gotta say, it’s great!)

[Reply]

Good for you for putting your body’s best interest first! You will kill those 26.2 miles when you get there!!

[Reply]

Its a tough decision; but its the right one. Get that foot healthy and then you can get back after your goal.

[Reply]

You made the right decision. It WILL happen! Just remember to take care of yourself!

I love the picture of your guys – too funny!

[Reply]

good idea. listen to your body. sorry you had to postpone, but you’ll get there!

[Reply]

I think that’s a good decision.. gotta think long term! You don’t want your foot to not heal!

[Reply]

Congratulations on making the right decision for you! That must have been so hard but it is obviously for the best. Like you said – there is always next year and how much better to kick butt at that than to struggle and be in pain for this year? Tons, I say.
Yay you!

[Reply]

So sorry you had to call off the marathon…. but know that you are doing the best thing for your body! Now you can focus on healing and later on the new marathon next year! :D

[Reply]

Just keep thinking about the 2010 Marathon! You’re being smart by listening to your body.

[Reply]

I think that’s the right decision, you don’t want to hurt it any more and miss out on future running opportunities – the 2010 marathon will be here before you know it!

Happy Tuesday!

[Reply]

Good attitude, life isn’t always fair, right?

Keep kickin’ butt until the 2010 Marathon!!!

[Reply]

I’m sorry to hear about your foot, but I’m happy to hear that you are really doing what you need to do to take care of yourself. I love that you’ve already set your sights on a future opportunity! Awesome! :-)

[Reply]

You’re so smart for listening to your body! I didn’t listen and it only led to surgeries and not being able to run…at all. Love the picture at the end…too cute!

[Reply]

Sorry to hear this, but definitely think you are making a good call. Love your attitude :D Yay 2010!

[Reply]

awww way to be smart, but still it stinks!! Good luck with recovery and damn from that picture you are going to tear it up

[Reply]

Hahaha no matter how many times I see that picture, I love it :)

I’m glad you decided to listen to what your body is telling you and make that decision. I’m sure you’ll be back and swingin!

[Reply]

hahahaha that is the BEST picture! i am sorry about your marathon training – the same thing happened to me TWICE. i started training, and then life took over. now i am set to race in a couple weeks, so i have no doubt you will get there too!

[Reply]

im so sorry you can’t run the marathon! I had to quit my half as well, and i’m just gearing up for next year! i’m glad we have the same mindset! you’re going to rock it next year girl, i just know it :) xoxo
