I’ve got some good news and I’ve got some bad news. I’ve been meaning to update y’all for a while now, but just got final confirmation today. Here we go:
GOOD NEWS: Turns out I do NOT have a stress fracture in my foot. Wooohoooo right?!
BAD NEWS: I paid an INSANE amount of money for an MRI.
MORE BAD NEWS: I’m now left asking – WTF is wrong with my foot??
After ducking my calls for over 2 weeks – I finally go the doctor on the phone today – only for him to suggest very lame, very general things like “stretch, physical therapy, take an anti-inflammatory, might be tendonitis, but who knows….” When I pushed him on actual solutions (ie – kinesio-taping, orthodics, a brace, etc.) – he told he didn’t really know anything about that -but I could maybe go see a podiatrist. Great – thanks. Yeah – I’d LOVE TO SPEND more money right now.
Really – I’m just a little annoyed by the doctor, not so much what he said. I don’t think a podiatrist is that bad of an option – I’m still just bent out of shape I caved and paid for an MRI I didn’t need. If I would have known a podiatrist was an option at my first appointment – I would have taken the 4 weeks in the boot, THEN gone to see the podiatrist – NOT gone to get the MRI. Oh well.
So impart some wisdom on me ya’ll!!!
You always have such great suggestions/advice. What should I do now? What would you do if you were me? My foot still hurts (nothing like it used to) – and I know I can’t run on it yet. C’mon – guide me!
Now that I got my belly-achin’ (LOVE that word) out of the way – let’s get onto the food, shall we?
Breakfast – “Spicy Oats Nemesis” – aka – Peanut Pumpkin Butter Oatmeal!!!

Followed up with the rest of my leftover Lentil Chili - served Cincinnati style again!

I used the Pasta Slims from Pulmuone again – these seriously rock! Thanks Pulmuone!!!

“Warm color” rainbow veggies for snack:

After Mike picked me up from work – I took Lando on a nice long 45 minute walk. It was a GORGEOUS fall day in Cleveland yesterday!
Perfect weather – 70 degrees! By the time we got home, it was 7pm – and when Mike asked “what was for dinner, do you feel like cooking?” – I knew he was prompting me – because he wanted food from a restaurant. Which couldn’t have SOUNDED BETTER to me!
We chose: Rockne’s!
I know Rockne’s is a chain, but there is just SOMETHING about this Buffalo Chicken Salad that is absolutely amazing!!!!!!

I pretty much licked the damn thing clean! It is THAT good! I was full when I had about 1/4 left – but I just kept on truckin’, I love it THAT much!

Almost spotless!
Seriously – if you have a Rockne’s near you, and you eat chicken – GO ORDER THIS SALAD TONIGHT (make sure to get their “House Italian”!!!) – it will not disappoint!
I’ll leave you with Lando – being a monster – AGAIN! It’s like she hit the “Terrible 2′s” or something. She was doing so well for a long time (*I know my family is rolling their eyes here*
), and the past few weeks, she’s seriously been a little demon 24/7!

Lately – when she is “bored” (I mean really – how in the eff is she bored? I walked her for 45 minutes, and that’s a long time for a small dog!) – she hops up and pulls whatever she can off the coffee table, so that I will chase her! I’m not kidding – a DEMON!!!
Here she is ripping up the extra napkins from dinner, waiting for me to give chase.
What am I going to do with her?

Honestly, I’d probably end up seeing a podiatrist. I can completely understand why you’re hesitant though. Maybe give it a week and if taking it easy still isn’t working out, then make a podiatrist appointment. Sorry for all the frustrations! It’s annoying when you can’t pinpoint what’s wrong and the doctor can’t help.
Lando is a smart little demon-puppy!! I hate the chase me game! Once The Brat escaped from our fenced in yard right after I finished walking her and played that game ALL THE WAY DOWN THE FRIGGIN STREET!! I was running like a maniac in flip flops because I had already taken off my shoes, while she kept running and looking back like, “HA-HA come get me!!”

That’s frustrating about the doctor. Argh.
Murphy likes to eat toilet paper and napkins too.

It was in the 70s in Pittsburgh yesterday too! I wish it would stay like that!
Sorry about your foot/doctor business. I’m prob swayed this way because it’s what I do, but if you went to see a PT they would be able to give you info about taping/orthotics/braces etc as well as find any musculoskeletal problems (i.e. muscle weakness or tightness or other things) and work on it manually and/or show you exercises or stretches that would help.

I’d continue to rest if I were you and then see how you feel in another week. I’d get a different pair of running shoes and make sure the shoes that you are wearing to work are super comfy and supportive. If you are still hurting, I’d go see the podiatrist. My stress fractures took 6 weeks to heal. Is there any chance they could have misread the MRI?

I think I would wait a few weeks and…try not running for a bit. Let it heal….and then try again. If you’re still having pain, hit up the foot dr!I wish I could walk Frank for that long! Great dinner out
Sometimes its nice to give yourself a break in the kitchen!

I actually had a pain the top of my left foot over the summer and my doctor did not think it was a stress fracture. She thinks I some how irritated a nerve in my foot. She noticed that I have a high arch and she said that people to who have high arches tend to put more weight on the outside of their foot and are prone to get nerve pain. I got fitted for orthotics and it took a good 4 weeks of wearing my orthotics for the pain to go away. Luckily I have good insurance so I didn’t have to pay for my orthotics because I know they are very expensive but it might be worth it for you.

I’m sorry about your foot. I would see either a podiatrist or a physical therapist. You’ve been resting it for quite some time now, the specialists may help you find ways to heal it. I know you don’t want to spend the extra money, but your health is worth it.
Good luck with your pup. Maybe he just wants new toys or something

I’m sorry about your foot, that blows. Honestly, I would see a podiatrist. I know spending more money sucks, but you want to know what wrong. In the meantime rest up and pop some advil

I would rest up and then if it still hurts go see a podiatrist. I actually had two foot surgeries in high school and can recommend my podiatrist! I hope your foot feels better soon.

Stay off your foot at much as possible – lots of elliptical, biking, swimming, etc. for you, lady! The body is a wonderful thing; it will heal if given time!
I would seriously give it 2-4 weeks and if there is no improvement, then hit up the podiatrist.

aw, Lando
so sorry about your foot! I would give it a little more rest and time, and if it doesn’t seem to be improving, go see the podiatrist. if you can find it, take some zyflamend- it’s a great natural, whole-food supplement that promotes a healthy inflammation response.
clean plate club, woot!!

I’m really sorry to hear about your foot – you pay so much for an MRI and expect to get a concrete answer!!
I hurt my foot back in July and never caved and paid for a doctor’s visit. After talking to some friends/family friends (who happen to be doctors), I decided to take off 2 months. I did the following: took ibuprofen and iced my foot every night, got new really supportive flip flops (North Face brand) for my walk to work, got my walk/shoe wear evaluated and got new sneakers, did not run and only did the elliptical or yoga (lightly). I never knew if I actually had a stress fracture, but I think all of these remedies helped (and it was good to feel proactive). I’m back to my old running self and although resting was haaard, it was worth it.
I’d recommend resting a little bit more on your own, but that’s just me

ohh i thought it WAS a podiatrist that recommended the MRI, not a regular doctor. i would say go see the podiatrist, and see if you can find one that specializes in sports injuries. it seems to me that he/she would be better suited for recommending the course of treatment, not the current doctor. and take your MRI results with you.

I don’t know why I didn’t suggest this – but I had plantar fascitis – it made it so painful to walk. I went to a podiatrist, he took x-rays of my feet and immediately diagnosed it! He took molds of my feet, I now wear professionally made inserts in my shoes, and I have been pain free ever since!
Insurance covered it – the inserts were $1,000 had it not been covered!

Did you say earlier if the pain was on the top of your foot? I think I remember reading that at some point…
I had a similar problem a few weeks ago, and the pain lasted for about two months. It didn’t bother me too much while running, but once I stopped and it stiffened up, I’d have trouble taking my shoes off, flexing the foot, and striding off. I knew it wasn’t a stress fracture, because the “hop test” produced no pain’ I figured tendonitis. The good thing about tendonitis? You can run through it. I kept running, and eventually it went away on its own. If you can tolerate running on it, go for it. The frequent activitiy might help keep the tendon stretched and limber.

I’m glad you don’t have a stress fracture…but what a frustrating situation! I would completely rest it, like everyone has said, but I would probably see a specialist soon. It sounds like you’ve been doing the right things and it’s not getting better.
My kitties have been acting up lately…shredded napkins and paper towels, ripping through a bag of hamburger buns (and eating them!), scratching my new dining room chairs! I tell them that it’s a good thing for them that they’re cute!

Sucks about your foot. Qhat sucks more is that you can’t feel you trust the doc.
Have you thought about giving Lando a big Chew or bone to occupy her time? It works for our dogs.

I bet if u go to a running store or club near u, someone can recommend a good sports therapist or some kind of specialty runner doc! Some doctors sound like they have more sympathy towards runners than others, and maybe one that is recommended will actually care to get to the bottom of you injury! Good luck

Well, at least it’s not a stress fracture! Gotta love insurance, eh? Maybe you can rest a while and then visit the podiastrist if it doesn’t get better with time? Not sure of the full situation (I’ve been behind on blog reading lately!), but definitely keep off of it!
Lando is the cutest dog name!

I agree with what others have said. If you’re still having problems, the best thing to do is get it checked out again. It blows that money even exists, and that things are so expensive on top of that.
(I am anti spending!)

Well you can either come visit me and I’ll get you in with my sports doc (who just also happens to be Kim’s doc as well and we love him!) who is awesome. Or I can see if I can contact him and see if he knows anyone up in Cleveland who he can recommend.
How old is Lando? Because dogs do have a “teenage” phase that is just like the terrible twos.

I wish I had something helpful to add about your foot. Just…don’t run through pain, I guess, because that will probably make it worse? Bah, that was super lame.
Lando is adorable…even when she’s ripping napkins to shreds!

Oh the love/hate relationship of running. I am always so paranoid everytime I have a pain in my foot. Luckily I work with a wonderful sports med doc (perk of working at a health center!!) so sometimes I am just sitting in his office with my shoe off- JK -ok just once. I would second and third the podiatrist. I now have one on call and he happens to be a runner too so it is awesome. It would probably be good to establish care with one not only for peace of mind but also to ease the stress of any other injuries (but we cross our fingers for no more pain). There is also a great site my sports med doc told me about hapad.com I think. They have great in shoe supports and things. Just something that might come in handy in the future. Good luck!!

That IS super annoying. Have you thought about trying acupuncture or some other kind of alernative medicine. It sounds like, unfortunately, you just need to give it time but maybe something could ease your pain in the meantime!?

I’m not sure what kind of doc you were seeing…so I dont’ want to suggest what you’ve already done. But I went to a sports doctor and he was FABULOUS. He dealt a lot with runners because he saw them all the time and he helped me tremendously with the different things ovr the last few years… no MRI’s needed

That sucks about your foot and the MRI. Health expenses are ridiculous and what a boring thing to pay for! Wish I had some advice, hope it gets better soon!
And that dog of yours is just too dang cute, I would find it impossible to give her any type of discipline!
