Spicy Oats V2.0

Every time I make this beautiful dish:1.13 062I have someone ask me “How do you make those – I MUST know how!!”

For a long time now – I’ve only been able to respond with a quick note, and link to this recipe (which is the ghetto “make it at work” version – still delicious, but not as good as “home made”).

So without further ado – Spicy Oats V2.0 – Homemade!

Ingredients you’ll need:1.13 032You could definitely use whatever oats you like, or are comfortable with cooking, but since I found these “Quick Cook Steel Cut Oats” at TJ’s last year – I haven’t looked back!  (Nor have I bought a container of Old Fashioned Oats!)

For the egg preparation – you can use whatever method you feel comfortable with – I always go with one of two options:

  1. Cooking them in a pan
  2. Poaching them in the microwave with my Egg Poachie (from the lovely Miss Bender!)

1.13 044I always get the water boiling first, while I’m getting all the other supplies ready:1.13 045 (Dirty burner pans OPTIONAL. Funny thing is – I actually took the time to turn them around because the dirt was all under the front burner and I thought “Oh I don’t want people to see what a terrible housekeeper I am!” – and really, turning it around just made it WORSE!  I digress… )

Once the water comes to a boil, add the desired amount of oatmeal, reduce heat and cover:1.13 046 1.13 047 After the oats have been dealt with – I get the egg going (whether it be in the microwave or on the stove):1.13 048 Optional: Dirty glares from tired, still half asleep dogs, saying “Where the heck is OUR breakfast, woman?” 1.13 049 1.13 052 After about 7-9 minutes (for the Quick Cook TJ’s brand), the oats should be done!  I always like to uncover, and let sit for a few minutes so it can sort of thicken up!  (perfect time to finish packing your lunch, or brush your teeth, or any of those other AM things you need to take care of!) 1.13 053 After the oats have thickened – add in desired amount of Frank’s sauce (in my case, TONS!):1.13 055 Optional: (Depending on how much you like your family/co-workers? ) Onion related spices  1.13 057 Last but not least – throw the Morning Star Sausage patty in the microwave for 45 seconds!

Combine oats, egg, and sausage in bowl – top with additional Frank’s (if you’d like), and whatever seasonings you’d like!1.13 0591.13 058 1.13 060 Other variations/toppings I’ve added in to spice it up even further:

  • The Heat Is On” Peanut Butter from PB&Co.
  • Laughing Cow Cheese Wedge
  • 2 eggs, no sausage
  • Sriracha

The possibilities are endless! ENJOY!  1.13 061

Such an awesome creation! Deliciousness all around. You know I love the pics of the irritated puppers too! Are they both still getting along well?? They’re so so cute

I have been meaning to try spicy oats for MONTHS!

thanks for the tutorial! I’ve never tried those sausages before

My fave part is the dogs looking for brekkie…I know that look well!! Super cute!

Okay, I’m definitely gonna have to try to make this. BUT I suck at poaching eggs so mine might have over easy eggs. :)

SPICY OATSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! i have been in love with you for months!!
my photos are never as good as your whale fin though. nice work!

I was going to ask you how to make these! Thank you for posting – it looks like it’d also be the perfect quick dinner fix. :)

So good–I do 1/4 cup thick oats with 1/4 oatbran, whisk in an egg towards the end, top with an organic morningstar, and add a dollop of The Heat Is On. Plenty of salt and heaven!

Beautiful post! :) Yay for the weekend!

Yum, yum. The Laughing Cow is an excellent addition, in my opinion.

I have been getting THE WORST breakfast “sausage” cravings lately and it’s weird because I’ve never had “sausage” so this is going on the “Make ASAP or Your Missing Out” list!

Don’t you hate it when you try to set up a nice picture and then when you get it on your computer you realize that something snuck in? Gotta love Photoshop :)

okay so those make my savory oats i had for lunch look LIKE CRAP! love that you added a sausage patty to it!

mmm love it! so glorious!

It’s the return of The Whale Fin! LOL I can’t find Frank’s anywhere on the west coast and every single time I go home to visit NY i forget it :( no wings or spicy oats for me!

Sriracha and I are having a love affair. I just bought the biggest bottle of it and I can’t wait to eat everything with it! :)

Thanks for the post! I need to hit up TJs for those oats, look great!

I’m totally stealing this meal tomorrow!!!!!!!!!! :D

I haven’t made spicy oats in forever – look for them this week! :D
