Ripe for the – dipping?

Good morning oatmeal, how are you today?

3.29 003

Combination of “Just Bananas, Flattened” from TJ’s, Naturally More PB, and Mariani Concord Grape Flavored Cranberries!  Magnificent!

One thing I’ve noticed with the Cut the Crap Challenge already – I’m getting back into the swing of eating oatmeal every morning – AND THAT – is a good thing!

My morning (and part of my afternoon, really) flew by because I had a meeting at Panera for the Boxer Rescue I volunteer for, and then I decide to stay there to get some blog work done!

Around 1:30 – my tummy said “HEY LADY – time for lunch”, so I ran next door to Wild Ginger for some sushi:

I got the Spicy Tuna Roll, the Spicy Shrimp Roll, and the California Roll:

It tasted just an fantastic as it looked!

One thing I noticed though – I eat sushi VERY quickly, because I think it’s too messy to take a bite of a piece. So instead – I just put the whole piece in my mouth (TWSS  – sorry, I can’t help myself!), and doing that makes in vanish in the blink of an eye!    Any tips for not scarfing my sushi?

Mike and I haven’t had a lot of time together lately – so we used our Sunday afternoon together to relax, lay around, enjoy each other’s company, and watch some movies!

After the arduous tasks of watching movies & 20 minutes of grocery shopping  – I came home hungry, and craving fruit! I chopped up the fresh pineapple and strawberries I got at the store:

Broke out the last Chobani in the fridge:

3.29 015

and made this “beautiful” dish:

(I can’t help but think “plop, plop” when I look at the yogurt)3.29 017

I forgot how wonderful fresh pineapple, blackberries and strawberries taste together!

3.29 020

While my fruit/yogurt concoction was delicious – it wasn’t enough food to consider “dinner”, so around 8 (while, perhaps, I may or may not have been watching Minute to Win It) I broke into this new hummus I found at TJ’s…

3.29 021

…and thought these delicious new chips were ripe for the dipping! ( I have no idea what I’m talking so strangely today, but suffice to say – I am CRACKING myself up!)

3.27 029

Yesterday was the most perfect Sunday I’ve had in a while!   It’s always good to end the week on such a bright note, filled with lots of puppy snuggling and husband/wife QT!

Question: What are your thoughts on sushi during my Cut the Crap Challenge?  I just automatically assumed “it’s healthy” – but now that I’m thinking about it – I don’t know ALL of the ingredients in sushi.  THOUGHTS?  Discuss!

I think you’re safe on the sushi… rice is usually seasoned with rice vinegar and a bit of sugar, the sauces are mayo based, and the only really “processed” stuff was the fake crab, but that’s not even that bad!

Looks like a great day of eats :)

Haha I’m the same way; just shove the entire roll into my mouth. It’s actually quite embarrassing at times…

But I think sushi is totally healthy! As long as you don’t get a super saucy one, and brown rice adds extra points.

Fresh fruit! So delicious with greek yogurt. Applaud the combo. And I totally want that hummus. I used some spicy pasta sauce tonight and thought of you :) I’ve never eaten sushi so I can’t help with your dilemma. Hope this week treats you very well!!

[Reply]

oooh that sushi looks good! I think it is a healthy option – as long as you avoid the crumbed chicken which can sometimes makes its way into the rolls. Vegie / raw fish is fine!

[Reply]

I agree with the previous comments- if you can avoid tempura rolls or anything with cream cheese/mayo sauces you’re looking at a pretty healthy meal!

And I am assuming you are a wasabi fan, given your heat obsession! My friends make fun of me each time I am eating sushi for this, but I have a tendency to delicately paint on a thin layer of wasabi on each individual roll with a chopstick, making me the world’s slowest sushi eater and the butt of all of my friends’ jokes, but it certainly slows down the eating process!

Thoughts, itemized:
1) Serious question, how difficult is it volunteering for a rescue organization? I’ve thought about doing one locally for a while, but I’m not sure if I can handle NOT adopting every dog at the rescue. :S
2) I just bought that hummus on Saturday too! I haven’t cracked it open yet, but I hope it lives up to my high standards…
3) I think you’re good with the sushi, as long as you avoid the fried rolls or the ones that contain cream cheese, such as the Philly Roll.
4) As far as ways to slow down on sushi, I just want to say that Asian cultures frown upon taking “bites” of sushi. You’re SUPPOSED to eat each piece in one bite! Hope this makes you feel better. :)

Your sushi looks fantastic :) Definitely a keeper for your cut the crap challenge as long as you stick to those types of rolls. Avoid the cream cheese, tempura, and mayo-filled ones and you will definitely meet the requirements of your challenge. If you need some other ideas… my favorite things to get with sushi to “bulk up” the meal while remaining healthy are miso soup and SEAWEED SALAD! I get seaweed salad at any restaurant where it is on the menu because it is so stinkin’ delicious. If you have yet to try it, do… immediately!! (But make sure you have some floss, this has a way of getting stuck in your teeth)

[Reply]

I second the seaweed salad idea to bulk up a sushi meal, sooo delicious. Sushi seems pretty healthy, especially since you didn’t get any tempura rolls or anything. It’s filled with veggies and fish- all good! I have to go over the Cut the Crap rules of my own tonight.

I’ve always wondered about Wild Ginger’s sushi – I ate the one time and wasn’t blown away by the pad thai I got, but I wanted to try their happy hour sushi special. Those rolls look great!

I think you made pretty responsible choices in line with the CTC Challenge guidelines.

It’s actually considered bad form to bite into sushi – you are supposed to eat it all in one big bite!

I am dying for some sushi right now! I could get California roll but Brady wants to try this new sushi place in Bexley and so we are waiting until after Baby H gets here!
Overall a really healthy lunch – brown rice might be a little better! You’re good though :) Speaking of seaweed salad – I am dying for that too, but I didn’t know if it was safe for the baby so I am holding off! :) Let’s get sushi together!

[Reply]

I have wanted to try those bananas from TJs forever! I think sushi is ok – you can get it with brown rice!

[Reply]

Youve been craving sushi lately – with a craving like that – you must be pregnant. HA (Seriously laughing out loud at how funny i am)

[Reply]

Do you have a rice cooker? I have been making steel cut oats in my rice cooker and OMG is it good. It takes about 90 mins though.

Thats great you volunteer for a boxer rescue, I volunteer for a Shar pei rescue myself!

As for the sushi, I would consider it safe for the challenge. I mean the main goal is to cut out crappy preservatives, etc and I consider sushi to be comprised of whole foods. Then again, I don’t eat sushi, so what do I know!

[Reply]

Oh and I got the jalepeno/cilantro TJs hummus this weekend and it is delish!

[Reply]

sushi can do either way (tempura is not healthy and neither are a lot of the mayo sauces; some people like cream cheese rolls too). veggies and fish are a good thing! If you get too into what you eat, your ocd about it becomes the crap!

I am not a sushi person but I love sashimi dipped into wasabi/soya combination and pickled young ginger….delicious! Your fruits/yoghurt looks great!

[Reply]

I want sushi now that I have read your blog. I think it is pretty healthy, but to make it healthier you should try it with brown rice. I know Hienens up your way makes it that way and it is just as yummy!!

[Reply]

Mmm, I love sushi!! I think it’s healthy as long as you don’t get the ones that have a bunch of mayo based sauces or crunchy (aka fried) bits?? I tend to go for the plain items (tuna / salmon / yellowtail rolls). And I love seaweed salad. Now I’m craving sushi :)

[Reply]

You’re fooling yourself with the sushi sister. While it’s certainly more healthy than a Double Cheeseburger, that white rice is doing nothing for you. Stick with sashimi and eat a seaweed salad before. You know I will gladly oblige you in a Tsunami Night at Sushi Rock. And who are we kidding, in a Double Cheeseburger a month from now! ;)

[Reply]

I have thought the exact same thing about sushi! I make it a point to take smaller bites of my food, but it’s just impossible in this case!

Overall I think sushi meets your requirements, especially if it uses brown rice.

[Reply]

HALLO! I just caught up on your life and daydreamed the day that we are together at the same blog conference thang!! I want to go and meet all the fab bloggers and eat and drink! When is the next one you be going to? I should just hold my own Homegirl Expo. Flip cup and hummus for all! :D :D

guilty sushi scarfer here….!

I’m so bad about rushing through my sushi! I agree with you, even when I want to eat it slowly, I can’t because taking 2 bites of one piece makes it all fall apart!

I never got to comment on your weekend run. I’m sorry it wasn’t great, but I am still in awe! 18 miles is 18 miles!

[Reply]

That sushi looks incredible. I think it fits the bill for the Cut the Crap Challenge…

[Reply]

Oh man, I could really go for some of that sushi RIGHT NOW. Thanks a lot :) The white rice can pack on a lot of calories if you’re not careful, and the spicy tuna is filled with delicious badness I believe. The other stuff looks great.

By the way, I forget who makes them, but you can also find those blue chips with no added salt. I personally still think they taste a little bland, but still pretty good.

[Reply]

I definitely consider sushi healthy! Some places will even make it with brown rice if you ask them…
I have never eaten a piece of sushi in more than one bite. It seems silly to. Maybe just take a few more minutes in between sushi pieces?

[Reply]

I love love love Chobani! It is my absolute favorite Greek Yogurt. I am not sure if you belong or know someone who does…but BJ’s has it in a nice box of 12… all the fruit flavors if you are into that!! I usually have my friend from work pick me up some!! They also carry it at Nature’s Bin from time to time but I notice they sell out quickly.

Have you tried Chia Seeds? They are supposedly the next “SUPER FOOD”. I add them to my oatmeal and yogurt. They sell them at Nature’s Bin and seem to curb cravings and give energy.

Sushi is alright… the soy sauce can get you but I usually ask for brown rice to make myself feel better about it and stick to raw and clean rolls that don’t contain sauces that contain mayo base. As for the whole bite thing…. I am all over that :-)

Love reading your blog!

[Reply]

Brown rice for sushi is healthy and tastes very good too. I love sushi, we have a Wild Ginger in Hoboken, NJ- I wonder if it is a chain?!

[Reply]

I already fell off the wagon with pizza and beer after a stellar job interview yesterday :/ BUT, i needed to celebrate and I’m back on board with you again today!! Those berries look ah.mazing! I love that hummus, I bring a pack of TJ’s corn and wheat tortillas to work, some hummus, sprouts, spinach, and whatever else and make wraps all week. It’s super easy and cheap!
