Vegan Month

Happy June Everybody! :)

Not only is today June 1st – but it’s also the official start of VEGAN MONTH!

Emily and I had the bright idea a few months ago, that it would be great to co-host a vegan challenge!  (we also decided, we should wait for a 30 day month, just so it was the shortest time possible   )

So with that being said – the rules are REALLY simple.

1. Eat vegan for 30 days.  That means no animal products whatsoever.  No meat, no dairy, no eggs, no fish, no honey.  That simple.

Now that specialized diets and food allergies are becoming more common – most packages are clearly marked & clearly call things out.

If you read ingredient lists anymore, you’ll see at the bottom there is a line calling out common allergens – for example: “Contains: DAIRY, SOY, GLUTEN” and some packages will even be specifically marked “Gluten Free” or “Vegan”.  Score one for me and Emily! :)

(Heather, over at With a Side of Sneakers posted a totally comprehensive list of SNEAKY INGREDIENTS to avoid!  Check out her entire post here!)

My “Start of Vegan Month” Two Cents:

  • I think I will miss eggs and fish/shrimp – A.LOT.
  • Diet Coke is vegan. Thank.GOD.
  • Certain kind of wines are not vegan! GAH! This may lead to problems, I’m going to do my best to only drink vegan wine
  • Eating anywhere other than my house is going to be super hard.
  • Naturally More isn’t vegan.  Wahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

So there you have it!

Would you like to join Emily and I on our 30 day adventure???  If so – just drop one of us a line and let us know! :)

HERE GOES NOTHIN’!

Good luck with your challenge!! (I love that you picked a 30 day month ;) ) I’ve been eating almost vegan for about a month now- sometimes it’s hard, but a lot of times it’s a lot easier than I thought! It makes you get pretty creative- especially when ordering out. Can’t wait to hear how it goes!

[Reply]

I think I’m in? Today looks like it will be good, but I’ll have to get real creative for this week if it’s going to happen.

PS: what are you planning for snacks? I’m drawing a blank when I think I can’t have yogurt :)

And I’m going to miss eggs the most, I think!

[Reply]

Good luck girly! I would join, but lacto ovo is as far as I go right now ;) I eat almost vegan most days, but like my dairy for additional protein! You will rock it.

[Reply]

Melt has vegan sandwiches!! That should take care of a couple days! Good luck!1

[Reply]

I give you major props for this. I would absolutely die without cheese for 30 days. And no yogurt? Oy. I wouldn’t last past lunch.

[Reply]

This is such a great idea. I love your challenges!

[Reply]

Girl, you are crazy (in a good way, of course)!! I don’t think I could live without my yogurt…. :)

Good luck to you and Emily! Can’t wait to see what food and snacks you come up with….

Good luck girlie! When I first started blogging, I did a Vegan/Gluten Free, Vegan and Vegetarian challenge with my friend. It’s actually easier than you think, but, being in restaurants is uber challenging. Veggie Shredds does make VEGAN cheese if that helps, but, only certain ones are vegan (others although soy, contain casein). If you need any ideas though, go under my Vegan tab and there are a bunch of recipes :D

I can’t wait to see how it goes!

I’m on board! I just so happen to start off the day Vegan!

[Reply]

Behind you 100%. I think you will find it is a lot easier than you imagined.

What was not easy was watching Tyler go home last night. :(

[Reply]

I feel like you explained this a lot more clearly than I did, perhaps I’ll just link over to you. :D And YAY for diet coke being vegan!

[Reply]

GOOD LUCK!

[Reply]

Good luck lady! Although I may not be joining you on the adventure, I will be cheering you along the way. :)

[Reply]

I really thought about joining you, except my marathon is at the end of this month and I guess I’m just afraid to make any big changes. I will however be watching for lots of ideas, so that whe nI get home from it I can be so healthy it’s crazy

[Reply]

you can do this :) ill try to bake some vegan goodies this month for you :)

[Reply]

What a champ you are for taking on this challenge! Good Luck!
(thank goodness diet coke is allowed ) :)

[Reply]

Oh no . . . not the wine!! I would miss my beloved cheese, I don’t think I’ve gone two days in a row without eating cheese!

Good luck – I’ll be interested to see how creative you can be eating wise! :D

Hope you had a great weekend!!

[Reply]

Good luck on your Vegan challenge, you’ll do great! I did Vegan for 2 weeks once before…hummus was my best friend!

[Reply]

WOOWWOOOOO! You are gonna do fab at this!!! :D There are so many awesome and inspiring vegan blogs out there cough MAMA PEA! cough. Wooohoo I can’t wait to read more as you do da challenge! And I’m sure if you google “Vegan Wines” you will find a whole list! 8)

I think you should have waited for February – but during a non-Leap Year year. (Go with it).

Just teasing!! I would love to join you but there is no way I could convince Bob to do this.

[Reply]

hey!

this is awesome news. i’ve been vegan coming up 2 years now and i love it – wouldn’t go back. if you need any help, drop me a line.

great places to eat vegan around these parts include tommy’s, johnny mango’s, great lakes. most places will help you out if you ask them to veganize for you.

i have a bunch of recipes i could send you but also check out http://www.fatfreevegan.com – they have a huuuuge database of delicious, healthy, vegan recipes.

becky x

p.s. cheese-wise, it’s tricky, ‘follow your heart vegan mozarella’ is the only one i’ve had that is any good. enjoy!

[Reply]

What a great idea!! Good luck with the challenge!

[Reply]

Be careful drinking at all and make sure you’re stocked up on vitamins. My friend was recently only a few weeks into a brand new vegan diet and broke out into crazy hives everytime she drank and it was a B vitamin deficincy, but that took a lot of blood tests to figure out.

[Reply]

I’m down for vegan month!

P.S., Some progresso soups don’t say “Contains Meat” at the bottom, but when you read the ingredients, it includes chicken/beef fat! Same with baked lays, and twinkies, and other random stuff. be careful!

On the flip side, PETA has a list of “accidentally vegan” foods that is useful at the grocery store! http://www.peta.org/accidentallyvegan/

Good luck with the Challenge – You can do it. I moved towards a vegan diet on May 3rd, so just a tad over 4 weeks now and I’ve done great.

[Reply]

That is going to be quite the challenge. It shouldn’t be too bad to stick with it since you have a buddy and you posted it up on your blog. That would definitely make me stick with it.

[Reply]

I would love to join you but the whole breastfeeding thing is not going to make it possible. I don’t have the time or energy to try and get everything I need on a new diet right now, but you go girl! Can’t wait to hear about how it goes!
I did have a delicious vegan lunch today! A vegan Boca Burger salad with romaine, avocado, tomato, pickles and ketchup and mustard for dressing. It was really good!
xoxo

Good luck on your challenge! No way will I be joining, but I hope it goes well for you. :)
