11 is MY number

Happy 2011 my dear friends!

Wanna know what?

I have a feeling 2011 is going to be a great year.

2010 was good an all, but there was too much undulation – the highs were really high and the lows were really low.

11 has always been my favorite number, and I’ve just got a good feeling    Dear 2011, I like you already!

Plus – I started out the year with a pork and sauerkraut dinner (okay – it was 99% sauerkraut, potatoes, and corn – there was just the TINEST piece of pork), so I’ve got myself set up, right??

Plus these mutts were there!

1.4 017

A year that starts like that can’t go wrong, right?

Like I said last year (when I dropped some truth bombs) – I’m not a huge fan of resolutions, but I do enjoy seeing everyone else’s resolutions, and I do think the new calendar year is a good time to assess your life, and get some things in order.

My friend Katrina (and Beth too!) made a list of restaurants she wanted to visit in 2011 (she did it in 2010 as well!) – and I just absolutely love that idea.  So Katrina – I hope you don’t mind – but I’m running with your idea!

THE 11 restaurants that I’ve never been to (even though I’ve lived in C-town almost all my life) and I want to check out in 2011:

  1. Lolita
  2. Ponte Vecchio
  3. Dante
  4. Umami Asian Grill
  5. Chinato
  6. L’Albatros
  7. Happy Dog
  8. Flying Fig
  9. Sokolowski’s University Inn
  10. La Cav du Vin
  11. Three Birds

Appropriate “resolution” for a foodie, no? :)

Question: What is the traditional “New Year’s Day Meal” in your area? It seems to vary by geographic area – I heard something about black eyed peas the other day – I’m interested to hear what you have say! :)

I get so excited when I see your posts in my reader. :)

Black eyed peas and collard greens are the tradition down here in the south… black eyed peas for their resemblance to coins and greens for the color of money… to ensure prosperity!

Allison, I’ll happily go to Happy Dog & Sokolowskis with you…just pick the date! ;-)

[Reply]

Jesus, Alison, I can’t stand to watch you miss out on these great restaurants! John and I or I will go with you to any of them at any time. You just call me, hit Open Table, and we’re off!

I worked at Three Birds the first summer it opened. If they still have it definitely order the Lobster Pizza appetizer. Its big enough to share and oh so good( if you like lobster of course!)

[Reply]

Awesome list! Like I told katrina though… Umami is terrible! Joe and I went and were completely unimpressed. On a better note… If you need a date for any of these dinners let me know, since we know how much Mike loves foodie restaurants ;)

There is not enough pork on that plate young lady…

Count me in for the Umami Asian Grill & Sokolowski’s University Inn trips!

On my list: Parallax, Red or Moxie (gotta have the steak for the husband), Palate in Strongsville and entire city of Chagrin Falls.

whoop whoop! Glad you’re excited about the year :) I have a running list of restaurants I want to visit on Urban Spoon. We tried to knock one off the other day, but it was closed. Down south- collards and black eyed peas seem to be a requirement! I had an adjusted version (I guess?) last night- kale & great northerns

I love the idea of resolving to visit new restaurants! I don’t think we have a traditional New Year’s meal around here, but we’ve only lived here 2 years, so we could just not know about it! The regional dish (we live in southern MD) seems to be a stuffed ham (stuffed with kale and oysters?) but I haven’t tried that yet!

Pork and kraut! I made pork country ribs with sauerkraut in the crockpot. Do you not like pork?

[Reply]

Love the list! And I see several that are the same as mine…so that’s a sign. I’ll be your dining partner any time. Like soon! Happy New Year. I have a feeling that 2011 is going to be a good year.

I had to comment because yours is BY FAR my favorite food blog! Not only are you incredibly sincere and charming about both your triumphs and travails, but you’ve got the CUTEST DOGS! (You’re a Pisces, aren’t you? We are the most adorable of signs!) Oh man! I wish my dog wasn’t criminally insane so that he could hang out with your well behaved ladies.

Keep on bloggin’! I love it down here in Miami!

Love this!!! Flying Fig is my favorite restaurant in the world :) . If you need a dining companion for any of these I will be home at the beg. of February!!

[Reply]

i will go to almost all of these places with you – just let me know when :)

Every New Year’s Day we go to Justin’s mother’s house and have the typical pork and sauerkraut. I’m not a huge fan of the kraut so I always have to mix it in with my mashed potatoes so it tastes better. :-)

I went to L’Albatros last summer…I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it!

Oh and I have a New Year’s resolution….see YOU more often!!

[Reply]

You’ve never been to 3 Birds!? Lady, get there now and order the Lobster pizza, it will change your life!!!!!!!!

We have pork n’ kraut, too!

[Reply]

Can I please dine with you when you go to these places?! I have been wanting to go to a bunch of those places too. My brother’s favorite is Sokolowski’s- he dreams of it!

Love,
Dani

Umm…my name is Allison and 11 is actually MY number.

Haha…I was born on the 11th, so it’s always been my favorite number. Pretty funny. :)

We always have the pork and sauerkraut too and my plate looks almost identical to yours. As big of a foodie as I am, I am not a big pork person (well, aside from bacon). I can make pork and appreciate it, but not a fan of eating it. And your restaurant list is great. I can say all except for Dante and Umami are great…and only because I also have yet to try Dante and Umami. Both are on my 2011 restaurants to try list :)

I love a post into which you work “undulation”. ;)

Oh yeah, it’s black eyed peas down here, but not for me. Blech.

If you like Happy Dogs, you should probably check out Seti’s. Nothing says blue collar Cleveland like a food truck in a parking lot. Also, if you have any resolutions to meet blog readers that share your love of things with melty cheese on them, I would be more than happy to join you at 3 Birds :-)

My family always had pork and sauerkraut on New Year’s Day growing up. I hated it!

What a great idea to list the restaurants you want to visit!

In the midwest, its definitely surf and turf and this year was no exception :D

My mom was from the south though and every New Years dinner she would make us kids eat one black eyed pea for good luck – it would take about 10 ounces of milk to get down one measly pea!

Happy Friday!

[Reply]

ALSO! I forgot to mention that Cubans (down here in Miami) eat 12 grapes as soon as the New Year starts. We also then sweep our front porch and throw out a bucket of water to get rid of any bad juju from the year before. I think I filled up a Flannigan’s cup with water and flung it out into the backyard this year. That should count, right?

[Reply]

I honestly don’t know what my area’s New Year’s food is! I suppose I should find out :)

Just found your blog…looking forward to reading around a bit.
